In the photo below, you can see several holes in the top plate of a wall that were drilled for wires to pass through. These holes could all be easily filled with spray foam, but finding these holes all over the attic would be a challenge without first removing the insulation, or performing an infrared inspection with a thermal imaging camera. The insulation had to be pushed aside to find these and take this photo.

Japan’s JERA joint venture, the world’s biggest buyer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), became a major electricity generator with the formal takeover of power stations owned by its two shareholders. JERA, which is owned by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) and Chubu Electric Power, had earlier taken on fuel procurement for its two shareholders, Japan’s biggest and third-biggest utilities. It has now assumed control of their fossil fuel power stations, giving it 68 GW of mostly gas and coal-fired power generation capacity domestically, nearly half the country’s power generation, as well as 9 GW overseas. TEPCO and Chubu will continue to hold separately their transmission grids and retail businesses. Japan’s government forced through more competition in the country’s highly regionalized $130 bn power market in the wake of the Fukushima meltdowns by allowing new entrants, encouraging renewables and supporting market trading of power.

A centralized community space featuring an overhead projector screen, community kitchen and cube-like, stackable furniture was also a part of the remodel.

The technologies that are used to design and manufacture sprinkler systems have undergone quite a few advancements and improvements since the 1870’s, but the basic concept actually has changed very little because flooding a room with water is still a very effective means of extinguishing or containing a fire quickly.  The overhead sprinkler heads are sealed with wax, metals which melt at relatively low temperatures, or a glass bulb which is filled with chemicals that burn quickly (such as alcohols, for example), and once a room reaches a certain temperature, the seals melt or break, and then the water is released.  Modern pumps are much more advanced than those found in earlier sprinkler systems, so the water is released faster and at a high volume, and less of it evaporates due to the heat of a fire. Modern systems are also available which use various forms of fire suppression chemicals instead of water.
